An awardee of SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium 2017
By Widia Anggraeni - September 11, 2019
I know it's been late after 2 years ago but here I want to share
my amazing experience as one of 50 selected students around the globe to get an
opportunity: SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium (22-23 September 2017)
(Thank you Gra for a nice pic with SLS signature board!)
At first, I am going to introduce myself, my name is
Widia Anggraeni, just a little girl with a million dreams in my head. I was one
of the geophysical students at Geophysical Engineering University of Lampung
and I was the President of Society of Exploration Geophysicist Student Chapter
University of Lampung for the 2016-2017 period (for short “SEG SC Unila”).
What is SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium?
This is what I copied from SEG website: SEG/Chevron
Student Leadership Symposium is a two-day focused leadership program. SLS
focused program for developing leadership skills, teamwork and communication
skills will include an address by the SEG President, best practices
presentations from selected Student Chapters, professional leadership coaching,
an organized team building activity, and a Strategic Problem Solving Session
with the SEG Executive Committee.
SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium offers travel
grants to students who are selected as SLS Participants. Travel grants will
cover the expenses for travel, lodging, and registration to SEG's Annual
Meeting. Only 50 selected student participants who are all active officers as
the representative of SEG's worldwide network of Student Chapters.
For further information, you can visit click on this
link: https://seg.org/Education/Student-Early-Career/Student-Programs/Student-Leadership-Symposium or contact students@seg.org for more information about the applicant
requirements and guidelines.
I was so lucky and grateful that I have been a part of 50
selected participants among more than 170 worldwide applicants. I still wonder
how the Chevron and SEG chose me as a participant, or because my Chapter is
Summit Rank? I guess it was not a reason, other chapters which Summit was not
selected to attend SLS. I might be assuming it based on your application, your
essays might be the strongest reason [at the end, we never know how the path of someone's Rejeki, Allah gifted it to you Widia, be grateful].
What do you need to prepare?
· Every year the
requirements are changing, but I will explain a glimpse of my application (the year of 2017)
· Personal information
is basic information about yourself such name, surname, date of birth, address, university information, and major.
· SEG membership
information and you are SEG Active Officer such your SEG ID Member, SEG officer occupation, etc.
· Confirmation of your
availability to provide required document through the preparation of SLS such
as Passport, Visa, Poster of your Chapter, etc.
· You have to make
some essays (every year the topic is different), 4 topic essays will examine your motivation for pursuing this opportunity, your qualifications and your insight about leadership especially about leadership in SEG Student
Chapter. I used to bring up some cases that I have through during my
leadership in SEG SC Unila. For example that the topic is: "How your SEG membership contributes to your professional development" I
express the detail by the case I faced in making a hard decision as a leader
(it was based on true story lol)
· Academic transcript, current resume and make sure you have
contacted your Faculty Advisor to give you a recommendation letter (make a
prior talk and send your email as enough time for her/him to complete it. Be
aware of the Deadline).
Well,
by this article, I want to express my gratitude to all who have helped me for
preparing SLS application: Mba Nina, Mba Devi, Kak Sasa, Kak Aldo, Thank you
for proofread my essay and gave me great feedback.
Being an awardee of SEG/Chevron Student Leadership
Symposium is SUCH A MILESTONE for me, presenting my SEG Student Chapter awarded
as the Summit Rank 2017 with 12 other Student Chapters around the globe! I
would express my sincere gratitude to SEG, Chevron and Great Team SEG SC Unila
2016/2017! I am so proud being a part of SEG SC Unila, you’re great team ever!

kak, i am a SEG Student Chapter member from University of Brawijaya. I am so impressed by your story, and it is my dream to be one of the SLS delegate. If you don't mind, could you please give tips and trick on how to write the good essay to be submitted to SLS ? Thank you in advance, Kak :)
ReplyDeleteHi,
Deletethe opportunity open for the active officer (mostly the participants were president, vice, secretary or treasury), because only one applicant is allowed for each Student Chapter, so it will depend on your chapter who will be nominated.
Good essay is how you can express the point by explaining and answering the topic SEG wanted. Several topics are asking about your experience during your leadership in SEG SC, thus you can put a sample experience and of course "put a little reason you are a qualified candidate to be participated in SLS"
You know, the most powerful is praying to God hehe (I don't know God's willing, but I was asking daily in my pray "I really want to go to US before graduate. It's came true.. Hehee)
Hope it's clear, Good luck!
kak, thank you so much for the respond. now that i already submitted my application. i hope that i can write and share my story as yours .. hehe, may all the success be with you kak !!
