An awardee of SEG/Chevron SLS 2017: The First Day Student Leadership Symposium

By Widia Anggraeni - September 23, 2019

23 September 2017 [Subuhnya jam 5.40an ]
I was staring outside from my window, I saw some cars and people busy in Weekend. I was preparing what should I bring for the first day. I have already prepared attire for it, I wore business professional attire as SLS mandatory to look as professional (dressed like you want to do a job interview as Chevron recruiters attending this event).
The first day started at 8 AM.. let’s go to Convention center a few blocks from Hyatt Regency by walk straightly through Dallas St.

[Norak banget ya Allah.. matanya ga bisa berpaling dari sekeliling wkkwk, kalo nyebrang harus mencet yang ditiang traffic light, maklumlah diindo mah raise your magic hand, kalo disini di tabrak dah]
[duh bahasa Inggris gue masih kagok huhuhu, apalagi sekamar aksen indianya kuat banget, kuping gue jadi mikir 2kali.. huhuhu serasa gabisa apa-apa T_T]

We arrived at Hilton Americas, let’s go to the Ballroom of Americas E at Level 2, Re-registration got your per diem allowance (covered your meals and ground transportation during the event) and name tag “write your nickname” so people could easy to know or call your name.

Then, every name had already set on the table, looked around where your name put on, and that’s your table complete with your name card, Polo T-shirt, and some documents of SLS included Welcoming letter from Chevron, Schedule, Leadership and early career Pocketbooks, Participant’s Biography, and Bingo game paper.. IT WAS REALLY COOL!

Made an acquaintance with my table mates, there’s Pari next to me who Master Student of UT at Permian Basin, and let’s have breakfast first, had Croissant, Fruit, and Juice [Apapun yang ada gue makan, inget kalo mau milih2 terus beli di luar, mehong bok wkwkwk]

During breakfast time, our biographies were shown on the screen, so we noticed each other. We had a great talk about ourselves and our student chapters, I read some of their biographies, so I could have a topic to talk (research would be a nice topic to talk). After finishing our breakfast, SLS First day is opened!
Don’t forget to pin your poster on the board.

Icebreaker: It’s time to Bingo Game!
All the statements were based on 50 participants’ things, so we have to make an acquaintance and had to have their signature on our paper correctly, some papers had different statements so could not be compared lol
Go go go, look on who fits with it, whose got all signed boxes will get a special gift!

A great way to make 50 students knowing each other by the game [gue mah ga pernah maen beginian, norak kaliii wid wkkww]
All the stated in the box can you find on participants’ biography, the most noted “Had experience in Military Service of Korean Govt” I would find the guy who has Korean name, it should be him! Got true! Lol

We made acquaintance as many as we could, and got their signature too! Who the fastest complete it, will be the winner!
I made a lot of acquaintances as I could, then after we mentioned our name, directly they recognized me after I helped them out about Glacier Tax Completion in Facebook Group,
“Oh are you Widia that helping out Glacier Tax in FB Group?”
“Yeah It’s me”
“Thank you, you’re really helping us”
“Of course my pleasure!” (btw Thanks kak Raynaldo Pratama who already helped me out about Glacier Tax before!) [Haha, keaktifan gue di grup FB ga sia-sia yak, jadi mereka inget gue]

Many of SLS participants were previous SEP Participants, So they have known each other, of course, they are cool!
I had a lot and great talk among SLS Participants, haven’t finished yet, and Magda already complete it! She’s the winner, meanwhile, the rule had to mention who was on the box and the person should be raised your hand and confirmed that’s you.

The Bingo time was over, went to the main agenda of the SLS first day: Opening and Safety Procedure by Linda (SEG Student and Early Career Manager) and Peter (Vice-Chair, SEG Foundation Board of Directors).
The next, Welcome Address By Chevron Representative
SEG Women’s Network Accomplishment and Mentoring365 by WNC representative
SEC Workshop Presentation Skills for strategic Session by Linda
Break and had some Coke

Here we went to poster station based on poster group, the presentation divided into 2 parts, Group 4 consist of 13 participants, for the first day 6 participants and the rest will be tomorrow Sunday (My name started by “W” last row, so my Student Chapter presentation would be tomorrow).
By the way, after I read the participants’ biographies, most participants were Master and Ph.D. Students, and I? just Bachelor if I was not wrong, Undergraduate students were only 11 out of 50 participants.
Their presentations were so cool, their chapter as well as their personal research [gue mah ya apa yaa.. ga bisa apa-apa huhu.. Remahan peyek

The next program was Leadership Session by Dave – Chevron Geophysicist until lunch Time “It was really great knowledge I got! So grateful for it”

12 PM, we have Lunch with SEG Board of Directors , Address by SEG President, and Keynote speaker by Chevron General Manager Exploration Deep water Gulf of Mexico. SLS program was so so awesome program where all geophysicists gathering in this biggest annual meeting, Unbelievable I became a part of it! [sembari antri, gue itu engga betahan banget kalo diem-dieman, jadi ya siapapun samping gue pasti gue ajak ngomong, dan karena emang belum sempet kenal tadi sama beberapa anak SLS, jadi sekalian banget kenalan dan makan.. sumpah mereka keren keren banget]

After break and Lunch, SEG Board of directors facilitating break out groups discussion.. This discussion was about SEG and Early Career, Advancing in SEG Student Chapter, we expressed how SEG could be more facilitating and bridging in an early career as a geophysicist. We had a lot of suggestions for SEG, and of course for us as well in future opportunities. We hoped it will be applied by SEG and bring more benefits for geophysics graduates around the globe [Gue nanya, gimana kesempatan s1 gitu kan, katanya, “ga bisa jamin, palingan ya magang doank, berat si kalo jadi pekerja”, sedihhh T_T.. fix gue harus S2 fixx!!]

Group Photo with SEG Board and staff

We noted all suggestion and solution for SEG Student Chapter be better.. after our team has finished, we collaborate with the next table team for unifying our discussion result, wrote it on board and presented and discussed. At the end Linda and Kathryn Recap for SLS First Day.

Alhamudillah, the first day just finished :))

After finished the first day, we were going back to the hotel (tbh I was so sleepy, jetlag effect), bought some food from McD for Dinner [Tukune mung McD Coy, kismin hayati tuku kentang seketewuuu :((]. There was Optional Networking at St.Arnold Brewery Houston.
Unfortunately, Tanisa and Agra did not want to come to it, I guess so.. because it would be full of drink.. [maklum sok alim hihi yaa abis bingung klo networking gitu ya gimana yaa.. akhirnya gue ga ikut, padahal si temen sekamar ngajakin.. tapi cape banget juga kan, pola tidur belum bener.. so sorry ya mate
